Ingredients:
- 500 grams of fish, cut into pieces
- 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons of mustard oil
- 1/2 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds
- 2 bay leaves
- 2 dry red chilies
- 1/4 teaspoon of nigella seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon of cumin seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon of fennel seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon of coriander seeds
- 2 green chilies, slit
- 1/2 cup of yogurt, whisked
- 1 tablespoon of mustard paste
- 1/4 teaspoon of sugar
- 2 tablespoons of chopped coriander leaves
Method:
1. Wash the fish pieces and pat them dry. Sprinkle some turmeric powder and salt over them and rub well. Keep aside for 10 minutes.
2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the fish pieces in batches until golden and crisp on both sides. Drain on a paper towel and keep aside.
3. In the same oil, add the fenugreek seeds, bay leaves, dry red chilies, nigella seeds, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, and coriander seeds. Fry for a few seconds until fragrant.
4. Add the green chilies and yogurt and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
5. Add the mustard paste, sugar, and salt and mix well. Add some water if the gravy is too thick.
6. Gently slide in the fried fish pieces and coat them with the gravy. Simmer for another 10 minutes or until the fish is cooked through.
7. Sprinkle some chopped coriander leaves on top and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
